(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 28, 2015 ) Nashua, New Hampshire -- New national statistics places New Hampshire in second place for overall child well-being, however the state didn't rank too well when it came to drugs and alcohol. In fact, New Hampshire tied for worst in the nation for teen substance misuse according to data collected from the Annie E. Casey Foundation Kids Count.
National reports showed that New Hampshire, Vermont, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming all commonly share the highest rates of teens abusing both drugs and alcohol.
New Hampshire health officials noted that the percentage of teens who reported abusing drugs and alcohol has remained consistent from 2011 to 2013: .7 percent which equates to about 7,000 teens, according to a press release statement from New Hampshire Kids Count. New Hampshire Kids Count Executive Director Ellen Fineberg stated that the state's poor performance nationwide is an indicator for the need of more being done to address the issue of substance abuse.
New Hampshire state officials suggests that the data paints a picture that the state still has a long way to go, however officials claim that the state has been making progress as the rates of teen drug and alcohol misuse in the state has been on a decline. New Hampshire data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey collected from the years 2003 through 2013 shows a 14.2 percent decrease in teen alcohol use and a 6.2 percent drop in marijuana use during that period of time. During that 10 year span, teen alcohol use dropped from 47.1 percent to 32.9 percent, in addition binge drinking dropped from 30.6 percent to 17.3 percent. On the other hand, marijuana use has fluctuated during that time frame but has showed an overall drop from 30.6 percent to 24. 4 percent, according to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
Tym Rourke, chairman of the Governor's Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse suggests that the drop is a direct result of the education and prevention efforts geared towards teens in the state. Rourke says that although the state's rates of teen substance abuse are among the highest in the nation,. progress is still being made.
An associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire comments "It's quite disheartening to learn that our state is among the worst for teen substance abuse rates. However, I agree that the data is painting an untrue picture because we have definitely made progress in our fight against teen substance abuse as a state. I believe we should just use this data as ammo to up the ante in fighting harder to end this problem."
