(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 27, 2015 ) Beaverton, Oregon -- New plans were recently announced to celebrate the 10th annual Motorcycle Ride for Dad event. Held in Windsor, Illinois, this is one of many successful initiatives around the United States designed to raise funds and increase the awareness of prostate cancer. On average there are 200,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosis every year in America. With the incidence of this disease on the rise, more groups are getting together to encourage men to pay closer attention to their prostate health, while also raising money to assist with research.
On the 24th of May it's anticipated that over a thousand people will turn out to the small village of Windsor to participate in the Motorcycle Ride for Dad event. Luke Wilson, Super Bowl champion and resident of LaSalle will also be at the event, taking up the role of celebrity ride captain. Locally, this event has managed to generate over $500,000 for the Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation, proof that even a small group of people can make a big difference. However, the main purpose of this event is to raise awareness of the need to have regular prostate checks, as emphasized by event organizers.
"The more people know about what to do get checked out, the symptoms and where to go for help, the more people we can treat early; and that is key," said Kerri Hill, Windsor-Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation communications co-coordinator.
Ian Bentley, outreach manager for the local prostate cancer support group is heavily involved in this event and highlights the importance of raising public awareness for men’s health.
"Any cancer is a scary disease. One in seven men will get this in their lifetime, or one in three if you had a family member who had prostate cancer. We put out as much information we can through our support group. We get new people coming to us all the time."
As with any health problem, prevention is better than a cure. In addition to having regular check-ups, men can also better support their prostate health by making positive lifestyle choices.
