(Health-NewsWire.Net, August 07, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Omega-3 fatty acids are believed to have very powerful therapeutic benefits. High intake of these fats is associated with an improvement in several conditions and overall health. For individuals who are doing all they can to live longer lives, it appears omega-3 fats can be beneficial for them.
A novel study links high omega-3 levels to longevity. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in various fish types such as salmon and tuna. People can incorporate fish in their daily diet to get their daily dose of omega-3s. There are also fish oil supplements available for individuals who don't want to consume fish and other omega-3 food sources.
The 16-year study involved adults from 69 to 79 years of age, and it linked high omega-3 fatty acid level intake with reduced risk of death. According to the study, individuals with the highest amounts of omega-3 blood levels had an average lifespan of 2.3 years longer than those with low omega-3 fatty acid levels. It was also found that participants with higher omega-3s were 27 percent less susceptible to dying within 16 years. The added longevity was believed to be due to the 35 percent drop in the risk of heart disease death.
Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., Harvard School of Public Health's professor of epidemiology and study lead author, believes that the findings of the study support the relevance of sufficient blood omega-3 levels for cardiovascular health. He also added that later in life, the benefits of the fats could potentially extend the years of one's remaining life.
"For individuals who eat little to no fish, it wouldn't hurt to take fish oil supplements," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
The scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health and University of Washington conducted the 16-year study that compared omega-3 fatty acids to total deaths and the specific causes among individuals between 69 to 79 years. They aimed to test the levels of omega-3 fats in individuals who did not take fish oil supplements. All the participants were generally healthy, and they did not suffer from conditions such as stroke, coronary heart disease or heart failure.
The researchers measured the EPA, DHA and DPA levels in the blood samples of the participants, and made some adjustments for demographic dietary, cardiovascular and lifestyle factors. They found that the three omega-3 fats, combined or individually, were linked with a significantly low risk of mortality.
DHA was associated with a 40 percent drop in the risk of mortality due to coronary heart disease. DPA was associated with reduced risk of death due to stroke, and EPA was strongly linked with a lower risk of heart attack that is not fatal (amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K/).
