(Health-NewsWire.Net, August 13, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Natural supplements are believed to be very helpful for health. As a matter of fact, they are used by many people for a variety of health purposes. For individuals who are looking for some remedies to help them with their cholesterol levels, there is one natural ingredient they should find more about.
Researchers investigate the positive effects of turmeric on cholesterol levels. It is believed that the spice or its medicinal properties can help lower blood cholesterol. While it is widely used for culinary purposes, an increasing number of individuals are taking advantage of the spice's therapeutic properties. Turmeric adds flavor and color to dishes such as curries, and is often used as a condiment.
"Turmeric has an active ingredient called curcumin that is responsible for its deep orange-yellow color. Curcumin contains the medicinal properties of the spice," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
As of 2012, there were more than 70 clinical trials conducted and registered with the U.S. National Institutes of Health. These scientific studies have tried to investigate the health benefits offered by turmeric and curcumin. These studies found that turmeric has medicinal properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral agents, which are helpful for various ailments. The trials conducted about turmeric were animal-based, and further research is still underway to see if it has the same effects on humans.
The Indian Journal of Pharmacology published a study that investigated the effects of turmeric extract in mice with a high-cholesterol diet. During the 15th day out of the 60-day high cholesterol diet, there was an increase in the serum and liver cholesterol levels as the mice continued with the diet. The mice were given 5 percent turmeric extract, and it resulted in the reduction of triglyceride levels, as well as in serum and liver cholesterol levels. It also showed that turmeric's hypocholesterolemic effect is dose-dependent.
In a 2008 study published by the Journal of Bangladesh Pharmacological Society, it was also shown that turmeric has cholesterol-lowering benefits. The study involved feeding 20 guinea pigs, all male, a free-range diet for 30 days, and thereafter, they were separated in 4 groups.
The first group was a placebo group, while the three others were given turmeric, garlic and the combination of turmeric and garlic. It was found that the group who consumed turmeric and garlic, whether used in combination or alone, reduced blood cholesterol levels. The findings of the study also demonstrated that garlic can be used with turmeric to increase its lipid-lowering property (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
