(Health-NewsWire.Net, August 14, 2015 ) Chattanooga, TN -- Yvonne Hitchcock, a director of Santulana, enjoys running as part of her exercise program. "I run whenever I can and I always stretch before and after a run to help prevent injuries which would stop me from doing what I enjoy," Hitchcock said recently, "Our new Santulana Stretch Band comes in particularly helpful for that. Some runners use exercise bands or fitness stretch bands, others don't use equipment. It is the stretching that matters."
There has been much controversy over whether runners need to stretch before a run. A few years ago several academic papers reported that stretching before a run was unnecessary. However, in recent years, other papers have been published which say that stretching is just as important before a run as after one.
Running is a high impact sport, so beginning a run with muscles that haven't been stretched is injury waiting to happen. Many runners start their run with a five or ten minute jog, thinking this is enough to warm up the body, it isn't. There are many different stretching routines for runners to perform before they run.
Stretching after a run keeps the muscles, tendons and ligaments supple and helps prevent long-term injury. The most recommended stretches include the hamstring stretch, the hip flexor, the IT band stretch, the calf stretch, the lower back stretch and the buttock stretch.
Gregory Holtzman, associate professor of physical therapy at the University of Washington believes that weak hip flexors are the cause of many injuries. He is quoted as saying, "The body has the capacity to compensate for weak hip flexors, but the strategies to do that can lead to muscle imbalances and injury." Holtzman strongly recommends maintaining strong hip flexors and seeking professional advice on pre and post run stretching exercises to ensure success.
