(Health-NewsWire.Net, August 19, 2015 ) Miami, FL -- Police are finding more flakka, a synthetic drug, in Broward County than anywhere else in the U.S.. According to statistics from the U.S. Drug Enforcement agency, crime labs analyzed approximately 477 cases of fakka confiscated in Broward county in 2014. There wasn't a single county anywhere else in the U.S. which came close in range, however Chicago's Cook County reported 212 flakka cases.
When the data was adjusted for the population, Broward County's rate of flakka cases has surpassed all major urban counties. Broward County has a population of 1.8 million, equating to a rate of 27 flakka cases per 100,00 residents. "I don't think there's any definitive answers," said Jim Hall, an epidemiologist at Nova Southeastern University and Broward County's flakka expert. Despite not having an accurate answer for the rise of flakka use in Broward, local experts have theorized that the crackdown on pill mills left a void to be filled by the next drug trend, flakka.
Broward County has accounted for 55 percent of the state's 870 flakka cases in 2014, and Miami-Dade County accounted for 17 percent, equal to 145 cases. Orange County had the third highest rate with thirty cases and Palm Beach County in fourth place with 29 cases, each accounting for three percent of the state's flakka cases. Prior to 2014, Florida only had 149 flakka cases, one in 2011, 94 in 2012, and 54 in 2013.
"South Florida has a reputation as party people and has always been ground zero for cocaine and oxycodone, now it's flakka. It seems to be taking root. We hope we can stop this. I would rather South Florida be known for other things than the emergence of drug trends," says DEA special agent Kevin Stanfield, a supervisor at the DEA's headquarters in Weston, according to Sun Sentinel News.
Experts are also led to believe that flakka's popularity in South Florida is reflective of it's price, it can sell for as low as three to five dollars per hit, making it affordable to almost anyone. Fort Lauderdale Police Captain Dana Swisher says with the drug being so cheap, dealers have expanded the drug's reach by tapping Fort Lauderdale's populous homeless community as their customer base.
An associate from Miami Drug Rehab comments "With Broward County being the next county over from Miami-Dade, it's quite scary to learn that the flakka epidemic is hitting so close to home. Although Miami is already being impacted, I believe as the popularity of the drug continues to grow, the prevalence of flakka cases in all of South Florida will begin to skyrocket. This drug is very dangerous and with it being so cheap it's very challenging to combat against its use. I firmly believe that with continued effort we can help create a significant decline in flakka cases here in South Florida."
