(Health-NewsWire.Net, August 15, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- A new study presented at the World Cornea Congress, April 2015, showed that Omega 3 fatty acids do in fact help prevent meibomian gland dysfunction, or its more general term: Dry Eye Syndrome. The lead author of the study, Arun Jain, MD, is from the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the symptoms of dry eye by stabilizing tear film and increasing tear secretion. The team took the research and tested it.
The study was conducted on 60 patients with moderate signs and symptoms of meibomian gland dysfunction who were not already being treated for the syndrome. The first half of the patients were placed in the treatment group. They took two capsules of omega 3 fish oil twice daily. The 1.2 g daily dose of omega-3 fatty acid consisted of eicosapentaenoic acid 720 mg and docosahexaenoic acid 480 mg. The second half of the study patients took a placebo group which took vitamin E 400 mg daily.
During the study there was improvement seen in both groups, but the improvement was higher in the Omega 3 fatty acid group. The objective measured of tear breakup time where the group that took the omega 3 fatty acids had a higher percentage at 105, than the placebo group at 51%. In the Schirmer's test, meibum expressibility, and meibum quality, scores were also similar in both groups the beginning, but more improvement was seen in the Omega 3 fatty acid group over time.
The study will need to be reproduced with patients that are from other areas as the patients in this study were from North India, where there are not a lot of polyunsaturated fats in the diet. But this study provided strong evidence that omega-3 fatty acids are effective in the treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction.
