To protect the rescue breather the company now includes a full function one-way valve on their keychain-sized ResQue1st CPR mask, which is designed to allow a full flow of rescue oxygen to the victim, while protecting the rescue breather from any return flow.
CPR masks are intended to act as a barrier between the victim and the rescue breather, but a full-size CPR mask can be too large to carry or keep on hand easily. To solve that issue smaller masks were made, many small enough to be folded and stored in a small pouch that would fit in the pocket or other small space, thus making it easy to keep on hand at all times. With many of those masks, however, quality was sacrificed. Filters were used to control airflow and protect the rescue breather, but filters are not only less effective at blocking back flow, they interfere with the full flow of the rescue breathing itself.
"This little one-way valve has solved a lot of issues," says Ms. Loehwing. "It allows a full flow of air to the victim, and completely stops any exhaled return flow to protect you as the CPR giver. It's fixed right in the center of the mask, so when you pull out the mask and fold it out you're ready to go."
The ResQue1st CPR mini-mask folds to a 2 inch by 2 inch pouch that can be carried on a key ring. When folded out for use the breathing barrier is semi-transparent with instructions printed clearly on the front face. The semi-transparency allows the rescue breather to monitor patient color and response during CPR.
