(Health-NewsWire.Net, August 28, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- A new study by researchers at the University Hospitals of Leicester in the United Kingdom and published by American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, shows the Omega 3 fatty acids may improve treatment response to anti-tumor medications and add to the quality of life for cancer patients. The 50 study subjects had advanced pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is cancer that begins in the pancreas, which is the organ lying behind the lower part of the stomach. According to the Mayo Clinic, 'The pancreas secretes enzymes that aid digestion and hormones that help regulate the metabolism of sugars. This type of cancer is often detected late, spreads rapidly, and has a poor prognosis.' While it is a rare cancer, 20,000 to 200,000 US cases per year, the study of quality of life on advanced pancreatic cancer patients is helpful to the majority of those with the diagnosis. The subjects were given 1,000 mg of gemcitabine, chemotherapy drug, weekly followed by up to 100 g of omega-3 rich lipid emulsion for three weeks followed by a rest week. They continued this cycle for up to six cycles, unless the patient asked for it to stop, passed away, or their blood test came back with unacceptable toxicity.
The study found evidence of activity in response and disease stabilization rates. This is an amazing finding that could point to Omega 3 fish oil helping by stabilizing cancer cells. In other findings, there was a reduction in liver metastasis volume. Liver metastasis is the cancerous tumors that form in the liver as a secondary cancer coming from the primary pancreatic cancer. Therefore, the cancer cells in the metastatic liver are not liver cells, but cells that spread from another part of the body. In this study, these cells were reduced, pointing to a positive result that cannot currently be explained other than the Omega 3 fish oil.
But what arguably is the most important finding is what showed in quality of life for these cancer patients. These are measured through surveys and the findings were clear: improved quality of life scores in this group of patients. While the cure for cancer is of utmost importance when doing research on the disease, improving the quality of the lives of those who are suffering is admirable as well.
This is the first study to use Omega-3 fish oil with a chemotherapy drug in a cancer setting. The study was promising enough to know that more research is needed.
