(Health-NewsWire.Net, September 01, 2015 ) San Diego, CA -- Father Simeon Corona of St. Gregory of Nyssa Greek Orthodox Church located in El Cajon, CA is sponsoring as well as participating in an upcoming Swim (September 12, 2015) to benefit San Diego Downtown homeless ministry, God's Extended Hand Ministries. This is the 3rd year that Fr. Simeon has done this 14km (8.7 miles) swim from South Coronado Island, CA to Rosarito, Mexico. Last year's beneficiary of the Swim was Project Mexico. Project Mexico is a non-profit organization which performs works of mercy and helps others do works of mercy in the name of Jesus Christ, transcending cultural barriers by building homes for the poor in Mexico and by providing a home for orphaned boys through St. Innocent Orphanage.
The idea for the swim came about during one of Father Simeon's visit to Project Mexico. From the location, he would see Coronado Island and, being an ocean swimmer, he often contemplated what it would take to swim to it. Around Father Simeon’s birthday (September 5th), he likes to push himself with a challenging swim which now has evolved into an annual event in which he invites his fellow La Jolla Cove swimmers to join him and spread the word about a worthwhile ministry. Father Simeon would like to extend the invitation to all of San Diego to participate either as a swimmer, a sponsor or a donor.
This year’s beneficiary will be God's Extended Hand Ministries. All proceeds will go to God’s Extended Hand Ministries, which provides, through the help of partners, sponsors and volunteers: meals, overnight shelter, clothing, religious counseling, mental health counseling, legal assistance, a food pantry as well as haircuts to San Diego’s Downtown homeless population which has grown by 25% since 2014 according to the Regional Task Force on Homeless.
