About Intraoperative Neuromonitoring
Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) technology involves the use of IONM devices to assess the function of the nerves and spinal cord during surgeries. It can be used in various surgical procedures including neurosurgery, vascular surgery, ENT surgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiac surgery, genitourinary surgery, interventional radiological procedures, and other general surgeries. It plays a vital role in surgery to provide immediate feedback and warning to the surgeon before permanent nerve injury occurs. IONM employs various electrophysiological modalities such as SSEP, MEP, EEG, and EMG. The use of IONM modalities depends on part in which nervous system is at risk. It considerably reduces the rates of injury and mortality during an operation. SSEPs measures the transmission of sensation below and above the area of surgery and this technology is widely used by surgeons. MEPs measure neuroelectrical signals recorded from the spinal cord and peripheral muscles. EMG is used to detect the electrical potential produced by muscle cells, whereas the EEG is used to detect defects associated with the electrical activity in the brain.
The Intraoperative Neuromonitoring market in the US to grow at a CAGR of 8.19 percent over the period 2015-2019.
