(Health-NewsWire.Net, September 02, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- A new research study published at Nature Communications points to evidence that Omega 3 fatty acids are not just good for heart health, but they also help with the prevention of schizophrenia. A senior research fellow at the University of Melbourne, and study author, G. Paul Amminger and his team of researchers evaluated the effects of omega-3s in fish oil with a group of young people ages 13 to 25 who were at risk of developing psychosis. Psychosis is defined as a mental disorder characterized by a disconnection from reality. The risk included those who had signs of mild hallucinations, delusional thinking and those predisposed because of their family history.
The study monitored 81 people ages 13 to 25 years old for seven years. The subjects were divided into two groups, 40 people belonged in the control group while the remaining 41 individuals took fish oil pills. The Omega 3 fish oil pills contained 480 mgs of DHA and 700 mg of EPA.
The findings of the study showed 40% of those in the control group who took a placebo actually developed severe mental disorders. While only 10% of those in the group who took the fish oil pills progressed to severe mental illnesses. This 30% difference points to Omega 3 fatty acids being able to ward off schizophrenia if they are taken regularly and started as young adults.
This major study followed a smaller one, published at the US National Library of Medicine, where the researchers gave the Omega 3 fatty acids to the subjects on a 12-week trial. Then, the follow the subjects, again teens and young adults, for a year. For that study, the results were promising: 5% of the Omega-3 group went on to develop a psychotic disorder whereas 27.5% did so in the placebo group.
Study leader, Amminger and colleagues also took a look at the overall mental health of the two groups. They found for mental health conditions like mood and anxiety disorders, the Omega 3 fatty acids didn't always help. But fewer young people in the treatment group had specific types of anxiety disorders, they had a lower frequency of cannabis use - none versus 11.4% in the placebo arm - and about 3% in the placebo group had eating disorders where in the group that took the Omega 3 fish oil pills had none. Therefore, researchers felt that there is enough evidence to go on studying the phenomena.
