(Health-NewsWire.Net, September 07, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Today, a wide variety of medical conditions affect an increasing number of people, especially among the elderly population. One of the most prevalent conditions in old age is Alzheimer's disease. The good news is that the latest and probably most promising solution for this health problem can be found in the kitchen.
Curcumin's potential ability to combat Alzheimer's disease is finally revealed. Curcumin is a therapeutic ingredient that comes from the ancient spice called turmeric. This spice has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. A new study reveals that the therapeutic properties of curcumin can be potentially useful for individuals suffering from brain disease.
"People have been using turmeric powder in preparing treatments for burns and wounds. Today, it is widely used as a dietary supplement," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
Wellington Pham, Ph.D, assistant professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering, believes that curcumin has shown its ability to enter the brain, as well as in binding and destroying the beta-amyloid plaques found in Alzheimer's disease with reduced toxicity. Wellington is also the senior author of the study that was recently published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.
It is believed that the accumulation and aggregation of beta-amyloid, which are protein fragments, triggers the irreversible loss of neurons in cases of Alzheimer's disease.
The Shiga University of Medical Science's researchers Pham and Colleagues, created a new technique to send a molecule more efficiently to the brain. This molecule was similar to curcumin. According to Pham, one of the challenges in treating Alzheimer's disease is to determine the method of delivering drugs across the blood barrier in the brain. This barrier is designed to shield the brain from toxic molecules that could potentially harm neurons.
Pham added that the study demonstrated that using aerosolized curcumin was more efficient in delivery to the hippocampal and cortex areas than intravenous injection. The study involved the transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.
Curcumin supplements are widely popular nowadays, especially among individuals who want to improve their overall health condition. There are those who believe that curcumin can help them increase their protection against a variety of ailments, including Alzheimer's disease.
Consumers who want to make the most out of the therapeutic benefits offered by curcumin should choose a supplement that contains a bioavailability enhancer. A black pepper extract known as BioPerine is believed to be a powerful bioavailability enhancer, which means it can help increase curcumin absorption inside the body (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
