(Health-NewsWire.Net, September 10, 2015 ) Cincinnati, Ohio -- WCPO of Cincinnati, Ohio reports that a new bipartisan bill, "Maiden's Law", is being proposed to encourage mothers to seek treatment for their addiction without fear of losing access to their children. The bill is aimed primarily toward pregnant women who are often afraid to seek treatment because health care professionals are required to report drug use to Ohio's Children Services. If the bill passes, mothers who seek treatment before the 20th week of pregnancy will no longer have to fear the mandatory reporting. Mothers beyond this point can still receive the same amnesty with a judge's permission. The bill does not prevent the removal of a child from the mother's custody if other factors such as unsafe living environment or child endangerment are present. As a Cincinnati drug rehab center, Cincinnati Drug Rehab stands behind the proposed bill and urges its adoption in Ohio and throughout the United States.
The bill was proposed as a countermeasure to the increased rate of babies born to addicted mothers suffering what is known as neonatal abstinence syndrome or neonatal withdrawal. "Maiden's Law" was named for Representative Doug Green's granddaughter, who was born to an addicted mother and is now raised by her grandparents while her mother is allowed supervised visitation. He was inspired to push for law reform due to his personal experiences.
A representative of Cincinnati Drug Rehab responds, "As a facility offering drug rehab in Cincinnati, we are immensely supportive of the proposed bill. The epidemic of substance abuse in Ohio and across the country is spreading exponentially and affecting more people than ever before. Unborn children and newborns are particularly susceptible to the effects of drugs on their underdeveloped brains and organ systems. Any measures that can be taken to prevent the ill effects of drug abuse from affecting vulnerable young children should be taken, but not at the expense of the mother's relationship with the child."
