(Health-NewsWire.Net, September 10, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Turmeric is one of the medicinal spices that has been used for thousands of years to combat a range of ailments. Today, the use of the spice is not only considered as a part of people's culture; more and more research studies are revealing a range of its therapeutic benefits.
Studies reveal that turmeric has the potential to heal diabetic foot ulcers and other chronic, non-healing wounds such as bedsores. Pressure ulcers of bedsores are often a result of prolonged compression to body parts. While the damage is superficially limited to the skin, it can lead to severe deep tissue injury. This injury starts with the tissue that covers the bone in the compressed area.
"Turmeric has been widely popularized by its phytochemical called curcumin," said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott. Curcumin contains several therapeutic substances such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This phytochemical has been studied by reputable scientists and researchers. It has also been widely available through supplementation.
In a clinical trial published in the May 2008 issue of the Journal of Nursing, 58 individuals with bedsores were made to use turmeric oil. There was also a control group that received a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound. Both groups were treated with radiation. The researchers found that the turmeric group experienced significant improvements in their condition versus the control group.
There was also a pilot study that used herbal cream containing 2.43 percent turmeric, which was published August 2011 in the Indian Journal of Medical Research. The study was conducted by several treatment centers, and it involved forty participants with type 2 diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers. The severity of the wounds varied. It was found that the herbal cream was as effective as the standard silver sulphadiazine cream both in healing and closing the sores.
Lab and animal studies have also revealed that curcumin may have the ability to block 20S proteasome enzyme. According to research, this enzyme is associated with the onset of deep tissue pressure ulcers.
Curcumin supplements are commonly used as a natural alternative to pain relief drugs among individuals with arthritis. Curcumin is believed to fight inflammation, reduce swelling, and improve the mobility of arthritis sufferers. However, many individuals who do not suffer from arthritis but want to improve their overall health condition are also using curcumin supplements.
While curcumin has powerful therapeutic properties, it has low bioavailability, and this hinders its absorption inside the body. Curcumin supplements with a bioavailability-enhancing ingredient such as BioPerine are widely preferred nowadays. BioPerine is a black pepper extract that is believed to significantly enhance curcumin absorption inside the body (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Extract-Vegetarian/dp/B00VSVKJ8I/).
