(Health-NewsWire.Net, September 14, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Nowadays, many people are using natural alternatives, such as turmeric, to fight a variety of medical conditions. This ancient medicinal spice is believed to be extremely helpful among individuals who suffer from diseases such as arthritis. There have been quite a number of research studies conducted to explore more of the therapeutic properties of turmeric, and one involves its effects on brain health.
In a study published in the November 2006 copy of the American Journal of Epidemiology, researchers found turmeric can help promote brain health and cognitive function. The spice belongs to the ginger family, and has long been used for its ability to not just add color and taste to dishes, but also to provide nutrients. It is widely popularized by the therapeutic substances it contains, namely its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant substances.
"The therapeutic benefits of turmeric are believed to be coming from its ingredient, curcumin," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
Researchers in the study investigated the link between cognitive function in Elderly Asians and curry consumption level. It was found that participants who "occasionally", "often", or "very often" consumed curry obtained significantly better scores on certain tests that are designed to measure cognitive function versus those who rarely or never ate curry.
Researchers were not surprised by the results of the study. This is due to the fact that consumption of curcumin's powerful anti-inflammatory has long been strongly associated with an improvement of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
While the relationship of brain health and turmeric has been established by former studies, it appears that the spice's connection to Alzheimer's is much deeper. There are high amounts of amyloid protein in the brains of those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease. This is a highly damaging protein and is deemed to be one of the hallmarks of the condition.
The Journal of Neuroscience Research published a study in March 2004 that revealed curcumin has the ability to inhibit the formation of amyloid protein. Researchers believe the findings to be very promising, and the study author even concludes that curcumin could potentially be a key molecule for the development of a treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Researchers suspect that amyloid protein may be the response of the brain to infection or inflammation. Turmeric's powerful therapeutic properties may potentially reduce inflammation or a viral infection.
Curcumin supplements are widely available nowadays, and the best ones come with a bio-availability enhancing ingredient known as BioPerine. This ingredient is a black pepper extract that is believed to significantly help increase curcumin absorption in the body (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
