(Health-NewsWire.Net, September 18, 2015 ) London, UK -- New UK-based study suggests that eucalyptus oil is more effective than DEET in repelling mosquitoes. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine tested four different types of mosquito repellents before reaching this conclusion.
The first sample tested is a repellent based in the essential oil extracted from Neem, a plant belonging to the Mahogany family. The second one is a repellent made from a mixture of different essential oils that manifest some form of mosquito-repelling properties. The third repellent tested is a commercial-grade product that contains about 15% DEET chemical. The last repellent tested is based in eucalyptus, like Regal Earth Eucalyptus Oil, mixed with about 30% p-methane-diol. All four samples were applied at the same dosage and are tested for protection against Anopheles mosquitoes.
The samples based in Neem oil and the combination of essential oils did not show significant repelling capabilities. As expected, DEET resulted to a convincing score of 84.81% protection during the four-hour observation period. However, the results obtained using the fourth sample is very telling. The eucalyptus-based mosquito repellant scored 96.89% protection for the same observation period.
The result of this UK-based study has been corroborated in Tanzania when researchers found that eucalyptus-based repellents can give complete protection against Anopheles mosquito biting for at least six hours.
This result debunks many theories supporting the necessity of chemicals similar to DEET in combatting mosquito-transmitted diseases. Findings such as this purports that safer repellents can be manufactured from natural essential oils, products like the Regal Earth Eucalyptus Essential Oil being one of the examples.
Studies similar to these prove that consumers do not need to rely on chemicals to protect themselves and their families from mosquitos. There are safer alternatives to products containing DEET. Consumers can even make these botanical repellents at home by simply adding tiny drops of jojoba or castor oil to eucalyptus oil. Products like the Regal Earth Eucalyptus Essential Oil can be used for this purpose.
