(Health-NewsWire.Net, September 19, 2015 ) London, UK -- Study links sleeping in total darkness to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. As it turned out, wearing products like the Smarter Rest Sleep Mask in bed can help promote health. People who suffer from type 2 diabetes usually have impaired abilities to metabolize glucose due to reduced insulin production. But, the new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) shows that melatonin-insulin interaction can increase the plasma levels of the insulin produced in the pancreas.
Insulin plays an important role on how the body processes glucose. Carbohydrates obtained from food consumed is broken down and enters into the bloodstream in the form of glucose. This process signals the pancreas to produce insulin, which allows the cells to absorb the glucose in the blood. Insulin also helps the body store glycogen. Glycogen stored in the liver and in some muscles can be readily used by the body whenever it needs additional glucose in the bloodstream. Insulin also turns excess glucose in the blood into saturated fat. Low levels of insulin can pose serious threats to a person's health.
"Our research is the first of its kind to have revealed some sort of connection between the secretion of melatonin and the risk of type 2 diabetes," says BWH researcher Dr. Ciaran McMullan. He added that BWH hopes that such findings will prompt more researches geared towards examining the influences of melatonin secretion to glucose metabolism.
Melatonin is a naturally occurring neuro-hormone produced by the pineal gland from the substance amino acid tryptophan. In humans, melatonin is produced during sleep, usually at around 3:00 o'clock to 4:00 o'clock in the morning when people are usually in deep sleep. Body temperature drops during sleep and melatonin production is at its highest when the body's temperature is at its lowest.
The human body is hotwired to respond to light and darkness, along with other cues. Darkness usually signals the body to prepare to sleep and produce chemicals that will make a person feel drowsy. Unfortunately, with the current technological advances, the surroundings do not usually get dark enough. The natural sleep trigger is lost, along with people's chance to get a good and deep sleep every night.
The good news is, there are inexpensive ways to limit one's exposure to light, especially during sleep. The most common would be turning off the sources of light in the bedroom; this can also include turning off the television or computer monitor before going to bed. If turning the light source off is not possible, products like the Smarter Rest Sleep Mask can be used to simulate darkness.
A sleep mask is useless if it does not block all the light coming through. High quality sleep masks, like the Smarter Rest Sleep Eye Mask, for example, does not only effectively block light but also gives the eyes enough room to blink without touching the mask.
