The study, published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology suggests that eating a diet rich in DHA and EPA fish oil may actually enhance the function of immune B cells.
The study was lead by Dr. Jenifer Fenton from Michigan State University. She suggest that the findings hint at possible immune enhancing properties of fish oil, "that could benefit immuno-compromised individuals." The research team noted that while DHA and EPA are widely believed to help prevent disease by reducing inflammation, until now, many scientists were not completely certain of any immune enhancing effects. This study has begun to change that opinion. The new findings show that DHA-rich fish oil enhances the activity of white blood cells known as B cell – so challenging the idea that fish oil is only immuno-suppressive.
