(Health-NewsWire.Net, September 30, 2015 ) Princeton, NJ -- September 27, 2015: People Tested Media's latest book, "Someone I Love Has ALS - A Family Caregiving Guide", edited by Jodi O'Donnell-Ames has just been published. The book is uniquely directed to families of the more than 30,000 Americans who are currently battling Lou Gehrig's disease (aka ALS- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). ALS is a neurodegenerative, terminal illness that received huge awareness with the 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge phenomenon, which has raised awareness and funds for the disease, which currently has no cure.
Jack Tatar, owner of People Tested Media, says of the book's publication, "With more awareness and 5,000 newly diagnosed patients in the U.S. each year alone, 'Someone I Love Has ALS' is a much needed resource. Imagine that someone you loved just received word that he or she has ALS? He or she will lose the ability to walk, speak, eat and eventually breathe independently as the disease progresses. They have so many questions and require so much support at that critical time and through their experience with the disease."
That life altering diagnosis is exactly what happened to Jodi O'Donnell-Ames when she was only 29 years old, when her late husband Kevin O'Donnell, then 30, was told that he had ALS. Kevin and Jodi were in disbelief as they held their 2 year old with their uncertain future in mind. Mrs. O'Donnell-Ames' work on this book grew out of that need that she, and so many families have when they are faced with this news are understanding how the family can provide care to the inflicted and face the news as a family. With the help of professionals like Dr. Terry Heiman Patterson, Philadelphia neurologist, Mrs. O'Donnell-Ames created a resource that she wished she had at that time that includes informative chapters about ALS from diagnosis to ventilation, while sharing personal perspectives from additional caregivers of all ages and skills.
Jack Tatar, Publisher of People Tested Publications says, "This is a book that I was excited to publish because it combines a resource of caregiving tips with personal narratives about loving someone with ALS."
Jodi O'Donnell-Ames is the Executive Director and Founder of Hope Loves Company, the only nonprofit in the United States dedicated to supporting the children and grandchildren of PALS - People living with ALS. She is also the author of "The Stars That Shine", a children's book that gently introduces ALS. Jodi was featured in People Magazine this year as a "Hero Among Us."
