(Health-NewsWire.Net, November 16, 2015 ) Salt Lake City, UT -- Controversy surrounds new idea "the obesity paradox" which suggests those carrying extra weight may outlive people who are thinner. However what it really comes down to is simply the level of cardiovascular fitness. Meaning, a person that is overweight but physically active will outlive a thinner person who does not exercise regularly.
As backwards as it sounds, many epidemiological studies show that overweight or obese people with heart disease tended toward a more positive prognosis as opposed to thinner people with the same disease. The journal Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases published a study in 2014 after finding that fitness levels rank higher than fatness in terms of long-term mortality. It a person is fit, no matter whether they're at an average weight, overweight or even obese, their survival rates were twice as high as anyone unfit.
Dr. Carl Lavie, author of "The Obesity Paradox", states "There is increasing evidence suggesting that fitness may in fact play a stronger role in survival than "fatness". It was also found in a different study that BMI did not affect mortality rates, and neither did waist circumference, when fitness was also put into consideration. If a person was "fit", their survival rates were good.
"When people's fitness levels are factored into their health, the obesity paradox actually disappears," Lavie says. "A person's weight — whether it's from their body fat or their lean tissue — is not the only factor that plays a role in their survival."
Lavie hopes the study results help those who need a boost of motivation to place a priority on their fitness, saying even "going from a sedentary lifestyle to getting light, regular physical activity could significantly cut risk."
