Shea Body Butter DIY Recipe-Coconut oil Moisturizer with Lavender by Blue Planet Organics
(Health-NewsWire.Net, November 17, 2015 ) San Francisco, Ca -- Shea body butter has many attributes to protect repair and prolong skins life. A quality of Shea butter which is less known is its natural spf protection. The average spf of Shea is 4-6, but can be more if combined with another mineral ingredient like zinc oxide. There are a lot of harmful chemicals found in an average tube of sunscreen that can cause allergic reactions, hormone disruption and even skin damage. The average person eats about 5 pounds of lip balm in a lifetime. The typically over the counter sunscreens include a combination of two to six of these active ingredients: oxybenzone (acts like estrogen in the body; alters sperm production in animals, and associated with endometriosis in women according to tests. Homosalate (disrupts estrogen, androgen and progesterone) and octinoxate produces a hormone like activity in the reproductive system, and thyroid and behavioral alterations in animal studies. Avobenzone, octisalate, and octocrylene are less harmful but still have drawbacks. Other mineral sunscreens typically use zinc oxide where tests show no evidence of hormone disruption. Additionally, titanium dioxide works like zinc oxide and also shows no evidence of hormone disruption. A number of products on the market may combine zinc oxide with chemical filters that show up on the market.
Zinc oxide mineral powder works against harmful ultraviolet rays and protects from UVA and UVB rays, and if combined with Shea in a DIY recipe it can be very healthy and protective for the skin. Blue Planet Organics indicated zinc oxide is a good ingredient to look for in sunscreen. Zinc Oxide should be 20% of a DIY formula in order in order to bump the SPF to 30. Blue Planet Organics shared a sunscreen recipe combining it with Shea butter. The recipe includes Shea butter, coconut oil or sweet almond oil, and beeswax. The amounts are 1/2 oz. beeswax pastilles, 1/4 cup. Shea butter, 1/4 cup. Coconut oil, and 2 tbsp zinc oxide powder.
The company said the recipe instructions are to combine the Shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler, and melt down before adding the beeswax. Let it cool and add to another bowl and then blend with a hand blender or mixer on medium and gradually add in the zinc powder. Blend it together until it is smooth and with chunks. Let it cool to room temperature. Store in a jar in a cool, dark cupboard for up to 4 to 6 weeks and the family has sunscreen for the winter winds and summer. The company said the sunscreen will be thick, so a user will need to rub it in and use a little at a time, but it will work well to protect from the sun naturally.
