(Health-NewsWire.Net, November 24, 2015 ) Foley, Alabama -- On November 19th 2015, Sustainable Pulse released a press about the announcement of Center for Food Safety to sue the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and to prevent the agency's approval for distribution and consumption of the genetically engineered AquaAdvantage® salmon produced by Aquabounty.
"The fallout from this decision will have enormous impact on the environment. Center for Food Safety has no choice but to file suit to stop the introduction of this dangerous contaminant," said Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of Center for Food Safety. "FDA has neglected its responsibility to protect the public."
According to the press, more than 40 members of the Congress have expressed vocal opposition to the approval of the AquaBounty transgenic salmon.
"The review process by FDA was inadequate, failed to fully examine the likely impacts of the salmon's introduction, and lacked a comprehensive analysis. This decision sets a dangerous precedent, lowering the standards of safety in this country. CFS will hold FDA to their obligations to the American people," says Andrew Kimbrell, the Executive Director of Center for Food Safety.
Canadian researchers have also made a study that genetically engineered Atlantic salmon can successfully cross-breed with brown trout, a closely related species common to areas surrounding both the facilities of Aquabounty, posing serious threats to other wild populations that are already endangered. On the other hand, there are some groups in the US that still promote Non-GMO and Non-hybrid products for sustainable reasons like VictoryGardens.
"The findings from the Canadian risk assessment show that FDA has based its assessment of this totally unnecessary technology on blind trust," said Wenonah Hauter. "It's clear that there are unique safety issues that FDA has failed to consider, which is why we are calling on the agency to terminate its review of GMO salmon."
According to Sustainable Pulse's article, Aquabounty has been facing criticism for not following basic environmental regulations in Panama, where the genetically engineered fish are being raised. "FDA has not acted in good faith with the American people. Rather than informing the public, FDA's announcement appears to be intended to minimize public awareness," added Kimbrell.
