(Health-NewsWire.Net, November 27, 2015 ) Florida -- As the entire country reels from the opiate epidemic, some states are arming surprising back-up forces to help combat the epidemic at home and in schools. According to WBRD in Kentucky eight year old students in third grade are undergoing training in how to administer narcan and naloxone. Many students volunteered to participate. The Harm Reduction Task Force's objective is to help introduce addiction as a disease, and its medications early on to prevent them from developing a stigma towards those in need of help from overdosing. Drug Florida Rehab suggests every state around the country should introduce similar programs to spread awareness in communities and promote treatment for substance use disorders.
An associate of the detox and rehabilitation center comments, "It's not enough to stop training in select cities around the Nation, we should all be armed with the knowledge to save a life- just as many are certified in CPR in middle and high school. If we place narcan, addiction, and overdose on the same level, the next generation will understand addiction for the disease it is, and may be able to brush away the stigma from older generations. No eight year old should ever have to administer narcan- especially not to a family member. But if it means the difference between being an orphan, or giving their loved one an opportunity to get treatment- we will always stand by the latter.
"But it can't end with students simply knowing how to administer Narcan, it must go beyond that. Teaching rehabilitation in health classes is essential. It's not enough to talk about how harmful drugs are, we must also teach solutions to those who are either experiencing the substance use or addiction- or in the instance where there is a history, or active addiction, in their immediate families. The more children know, the better positioned they are to get help."
