(Health-NewsWire.Net, December 11, 2015 ) Exeter, Devon -- Nigel Manning, co-owner and Marketing Director of Up-4-It.fit, suppliers of a range of health and fitness products, said "There ia a very common type of knee pain in adolescents that we come across, known as Osgood-Schlatter (OSD)." Although called a disease, it is in fact an overuse inflammation injury. The medical term was first introduced in 1903 when US orthopedic surgeon Robert Osgood and Swiss surgeon Carl Schlatter concurrently diagnosed this cause of adolescent knee pain.
Nigel added "I first heard about Osgood-Schlatter when my eldest son complained of a sore knee after fencing. The area just below the knee was completely swollen and he was having terrible difficulty moving his leg. After inspection at our local hospital, the consultant confirmed that it was OSD. Having never heard of it before, we were a bit bewildered as to the best way to treat it."
Osgood-Schlatter is an inflammation of the bone, cartilage, and/or tendon at the top of the shin bone. It is more common in boys than girls and usually affects adolescents between the ages of ten and fifteen. The condition usually develops after a sudden growth spurt, where the quadriceps muscles cannot keep up with the growth of the knee bones. The quadriceps end up being very tight causing a lot of tension where they attach just under the kneecap, resulting in Osgood-Schlatters. It tends to recur over a period of months to several years, but usually clears by the age of 18 when the growing period has finished. Sporting activities that involve running, jumping, climbing or descending stairs can make the pain worse.
"The consultant recommended the treatment R.I.C.E. – Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. My son found that specific exercises to improve strength and flexibility of the quadriceps, hamstring and calf muscles really helped. And a knee brace helped to stabilize the knee cap tendon during sporting activities," added Nigel Manning.
Up-4-It.fit's Knee Brace is made from a high quality neoprene with a breathable inside liner to keep users sweat-free and comfortable. The open patella design helps to reduce pressure on the knee cap while keeping it in place, and reducing slide and glide. Nigel explained, "Sports such as fencing, skiing, and any sport involving running and jumping, put a lot of strain on the knee cap and tendons. This brace contains dual side stabilizers which, together with the extra padding around the patella opening, assist weakened and sore knees by keeping the knee cap in its proper place, and holding the tendons together."
Up-4-It.fit distribute their Open Patella Knee Brace exclusively through Amazon.com, and Nigel pointed out that when two are purchased together there is no shipping cost.
