(Health-NewsWire.Net, December 15, 2015 ) New studies have found that a good quality mattress can take off the stress-related symptoms compared to older beds. This study compared sleep quality and stress-related symptoms between older beds ( beds older than 5 years) and new bedding symptoms.
Shockingly, 75% of Americans report with sleep problems a few nights per week or more. An estimate of 70 million people are currently affected by sleep problems. It has been found that an average individual gets about 7 hours of sleep per night, which can result to symptoms of sleep deprivation and has the potential to relate to a negative approach to life.
A popular medical dictionary defines insomnia as the inability to sleep or to remain asleep throughout the night. They have found that poor quality sleep is associated with poor mattress. Furthermore, stress is related to impaired and shortened sleep, sleep fragmentation and possibly a reduction in sleep stages 3 and 4. Those who demonstrate higher stress levels have been shown to have lower sleep efficiency. One survey estimated that 65% of Americans are losing sleep because of stress.
The comfort and support of the sleep surface are related to poor sleep quality and efficiency. Certain sleep surfaces have reported with complaints of low back pain, stiffness and shoulder pain. One study found that subjects developed back pain after sleeping on foam mattresses. In a comparison of beds categorized as “hard”, “softer”, “water”, “water/foam” , it was found that people reported reduced back pain after sleeping on hard beds. In 2 separate studies, medium-firm mattresses were proven to reduce back pain, shoulder pain, spine stiffness and positively affected sleep quality and that even subjects with minor sleep disturbances benefited significantly in sleep quality and efficiency with medium-firm bedding systems.
Currently, no formula exists for recommending bedding systems to meet specific sleep needs, or for reducing sleep disturbances. Health care professionals have little information to support the best mattress that reduces back pain and spine problems. Despite the lack of guidelines and cautions that physicians should avoid recommending firm mattresses, 75% of orthopedic surgeons, recommend firm or hard mattresses for back pain relief.
Conclusion
After hours of research and studies, it was found that participants who slept on old beds (more than 9 years old) had stress and anxiety-related symptoms. They suffered from insomnia and sleep deprivation. Compared to other mattresses, innerspring mattresses gave significant improvements in sleep quality and stress-affected participants.
