(Health-NewsWire.Net, December 20, 2015 ) The research news published on ‘JAMA Pediatrics’ recently stated the association between the antidepressants usage during pregnancy and Autism Spectrum disorder in children as a controversial fact. Though the study states profoundly about the increased prevalence, the queries related to the roots of autism is still unanswered.
The data for the research was collected by conducting a register-based study of an ongoing population –based cohort which includes data of all pregnancies and children in Quebec, Canada from January 1, 1998 to December 31, 2009. The medical records of a total of 145,456 newborn babies’ mothers for at least a year before their birth were made available for scrutinizing the usage of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors – SSRIs.
The research showed some interesting and depressing facts. Of the whole of the population taken, 1,054 babies (0.7%) of the registered babies were later diagnosed for autism spectrum disorder and boys outnumbered girls by a ratio of about 4:1. Out of 2,532 babies, whose mothers took an SSRI during her second and third trimester of pregnancy, 31 infants (1.2%) would have been diagnosed with autism in some time in their first six years of life. Around 40 babies (1%) whose mothers took an SSRI during their first trimester of pregnancy were eventually diagnosed with autism.
The researchers also compared rates of autism among babies born to women suffering from depression and babies born to women who took antidepressants during pregnancy. The study showed alarming results. They found that the possibility of autism is 75% in babies whose mother took an SSRI than those whose mothers had a history of depression.
Dr. Susan Hyman, the former chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ committee on autism and a professor of pediatrics at the University Of Rochester Medical Center stated that antidepressant usage during pregnancy period may well be one of the factors for the cause of autism, mood disorders or ADHD in children, but the research findings suggests that a child’s genetic vulnerability does play a major role in causing autism spectrum disorder.
The probable options are early diagnosis of depression in women and treatment for the same using natural remedies or Yoga or speak with their doctors about a non-drug treatment that works. There are many instances where Yoga and meditation had done wonders for depression. Yoga is best for anxiety too.
