According to Academy Dental, there are several important reasons why patients need to undergo a dental checkup in Victoria. In the clinic, the dentist checks for tiny fractures or cracks inside a tooth and they also look at cavities that can trigger the gum to recede. Sometimes they even take X-rays to make sure.
"Often the problems can't be seen with the naked eye, which is why patients can't rely on themselves to monitor the health of their teeth and gums," explains Dr. Van Gyn. Then they also check the state of previous dental work done, such as fillings, crowns, and dental implants, to see that everything is right where they should be and that everything is healthy.
"Sometimes restorations like fillings and crowns can wear down, and they may need some repair service," adds Dr. Van Gyn. "It's also possible that bridges and dentures may need some alteration so that they fit more comfortably."
The dental checkups also include looking for various signs of oral cancer and gum disease. The earlier they're found, the earlier they can be treated.
