(Health-NewsWire.Net, December 18, 2015 ) Vancouver, BC -- Arbutus North Dental, the popular center for oral health in Kitsilano, has called for greater awareness of the importance of oral health for Vancouver residents of all ages. The clinic has issued tips on how people can maintain and improve their oral health.
"Oral health is not just about the teeth, as it is linked to the overall health of the patient," warns Dr. Florence Lockhart, the head of Arbutus North Dental that was recently voted as the Best Dental Clinic on the Westside of Vancouver. "Poor oral health is associated with several dangerous illnesses, and that includes diabetes, heart disease, and stroke."
At Arbutus North Dental, the dental team helps maintain oral health for their patients by dealing with problems such as bad breath, teeth grinding, and mouth guard protection for sports. They offer oral screening as well. The clinic offers many tips for adults, as well as for parents who wish to help their children maintain their oral health with Vancouver oral health services.
"Believe it or not, but even a child that's just a year old can have tooth decay, which is why we encourage patients to bring in their children when they reach their first birthday," explains Dr. Lockhart. "We can check if the baby's fluoride needs are being met and if habits like thumb-sucking are harming the healthy development of the teeth."
Parents are taught to wipe the gums of babies with a new clean gauze pad. Flossing should also begin when two teeth touch. Dr. Lockhart however, warns against the use of toothpaste for children less than 2 years of age. "They should just use water instead," advises Dr. Lockhart. "Only when they reach their second birthday should they switch to toothpaste."
For teens, oral health relies on forming a habit of brushing and flossing the teeth regularly. However, special care must be taken when braces are used. This is also the time when some teens engage in sports, and Dr. Lockhart strongly advises the use of customized mouthguards for any kind of athletic activity.
"With our adult patients, we encourage them to use an antimicrobial or antiseptic rinse, as they should be mature enough to only use a small enough and to not swallow any of it," says Dr. Lockhart. "We also ask them to watch out for signs of poor oral health, which include loose or sensitive teeth, tender gums, and misaligned teeth." Seniors are advised to keep their dentures clean, and to note any discomfort with their dentures.
"In the end, patients of all ages can really benefit if they visit our clinic regularly," says Dr. Lockhart. "We have all the procedures, solutions, and tools necessary to help our patients in Vancouver maintain their oral health."
