(Health-NewsWire.Net, December 19, 2015 ) Lahaina, HI -- Dentist Lahaina, the well-known provider of oral cancer screenings in Hawaii, has warned that patients in the Lahaina area should increase their awareness of oral cancer. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 4,100 new cases of oral cancer were diagnosed in Canada in just 2013. Often this condition is fatal, as its mortality rate is greater than breast cancer and prostate cancer.
"We screen for oral cancer as a regular part of our dental checkups, because we are very much aware of the danger of this medical condition," says Dr. Dennis Ishimoto of Dentist Lahaina. "We also know that if oral cancer is caught at an early stage, it can be successfully treated."
While Dentist Lahaina has established a sterling reputation for enhancing the smiles of their patients, they have also become fierce advocates of oral cancer screening in Lahaina. Dr. Ishimoto and his team of dental hygienists are all qualified to administer an oral cancer examination in Lahaina to look for signs of the disease.
"We meticulously check the lips, the inside of the mouth, the throat tissue, and the tongue for sores and spots," explains Dr. Ishimoto. "Many of these sores and spots are harmless, but for some that are white or red, the patient may have to undergo further oral cancer exams in Lahaina to be sure."
The most common symptoms for oral cancer include those white or red spots in the oral cavity, as well as a rough, lumpy, or thickened spot. Mouth sores may also indicate oral cancer, especially if they bleed easily or they don't heal after two weeks. Numbness, pain, or any tenderness in the mouth or lips may also be a sign of oral cancer. It may also be a danger signal if the patient has any difficulties in swallowing, speaking, chewing, or moving the tongue or jaw.
"These signs don't necessarily mean that the patient has oral cancer, but we have the training to make sure that these are indeed caused by something else," admonishes Dr. Ishimoto. "And when we catch the signs of oral cancer early, we increase the chances of a successful treatment of the disease."
According to Dentist Lahaina, patients can help minimize the probability of getting oral cancer.
"We tell our Lahaina patients that the really should avoid all types of tobacco products, and if they drink they should only do so in moderation," says Dr. Ishimoto. "A healthy diet is important, and we also advise our patients to limit their exposure to the sun by using sun-blocking lotions on their lips and skin."
