However, it seems that those who want to reduce their risk of developing arthritis also need to restrict their intake of certain beverages.
Researchers are investigating the effects of caffeine in the development of arthritis. This stimulant is present in many beverages such as coffee, cocoa, tea and sodas. It is widely used due to its capacity to provide a burst of energy and reduce sleepiness.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham investigated whether the consumption of caffeine can increase the risk for joint diseases. It was found that those who consumed 3 cups of caffeine on a daily basis experienced an increased risk of developing joint conditions than those who did not drink caffeinated beverages. Health experts suggest that those who are already suffering from arthritis should see their doctor first before combining the use of caffeine and pain-relief drugs. A study conducted by The University of Washington found that mixing acetaminophen and caffeine can increase the risk for liver damage.
Scientists and health experts believe that more studies are still needed to see whether or not caffeine plays a definitive role in the development of arthritis. For now, they recommend that individuals should practice the necessary measures needed to avoid the condition. These measures include weight management and eating healthy food items.
