(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 09, 2015 ) Newark, NJ -- According to the Hudson Reporter the Secaucus Coalition for a Healthy and Drug Free Community (SCHDFC) has launched in Secaucus, NJ. The campaign titled "Parents Who Host Lose The Most: Don't Be a Party To Teenage Drinking. It's Against the Law" is dedicated to preventing underage drinking. For many years underage drinking has been a significant issue in Secaucus, NJ and now the SCHDFC is taking a stand.
In 2014 Hudson County Coalition conducted a youth survey, the shocking results reported that 24 percent of you countywide reported using alcohol daily on occasion throughout the year. The survey also revealed that 6 percent of students reported using prescription medications which had not been prescribed to them in the past year.
"Substance abuse amongst the youth has been an issue in Secaucus for several years, but this topic is not an easy subject to talk about," stated Tania Guaman, Coordinator for SCHDFC. "With the misperception of parents thinking 'not my child,' substance abuse issues often stay hidden behind homes or in the community. Based on the Secaucus Municipal Alliance's work and ongoing assessments for several years, we know that prevention efforts need to increase."
After the Town of Secaucus received a grant from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), Guaman founded the SCHDFC group in 2014 to help combat against underage drinking and prescription drug abuse. The group's objective is to implement "environmental strategies" by providing the community with educational events and campaigns to raise community awareness of the detriments of underage drinking and prescription drug abuse. The group is comprised of committed volunteers who hold meeting regularly to plan and coordinate activities for the campaign.
The coalition was intricately designed with the objectives to intervene, inform, and prevent underage drinking and prescription drug abuse. "SCHDFC is to enhance what was already in place," said Guaman.
An associate from Drug Rehab Newark comments "I applaud Tania Guaman for trying to fight back against underage drinking and prescription drug abuse among young teens. Many of us in New Jersey are aware of the epidemic of underage drinking in Secaucus that has been ongoing for many years, it's great that someone is finally stepping up to the table. We have treated many young teens at our alcohol rehab in Newark, NJ. When they share their stories of how they first got their hands on alcohol, it's typically at a friends house party or from their own parents. It's without question that parents need to start being more cautious about making alcohol easily accessible to their children. I am very hopeful that this campaign will not only raise awareness among young teens, but for the parents as well."
