(Health-NewsWire.Net, November 06, 2015 ) Chattanooga, TN -- Yvonne Hitchcock, a director of Santulana, is a mother of two children and she feels strongly about continuing to stretch and exercise during pregnancy. "Every healthy Mom-to-be should stretch and exercise during their pregnancy," says Ms. Hitchcock, "stretching, using an exercise band, is beneficial on many fronts as the body and mind prepare for the arrival of another little being."
The body changes dramatically during pregnancy, to the point that even the centre of gravity shifts within the body. Regular stretching with an exercise band helps to maintain correct body alignment during these changes, thus preventing many aches and pains associated with pregnancy.
Stretching throughout pregnancy helps to keep the joints supple and moving. This prevents a reduced range of motion which in turn can lead to shorter and tighter muscles. The worst case scenario is that this reduced range of motion causes the spine to misalign which results in backache.
Stretching is a natural relaxant and every Mom-to-be should allow herself the luxury of unwinding. Stress builds up over time and regular stretching allows the body and mind to let go of this tension. It also encourages slow, deep breathing which in turn, can help lower blood pressure. The time spent stretching can become a permanent part of life, even after baby is born. A time for relaxation and reflection.
Dr. David Jones, a gynaecologist at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Centre in California, advocates pregnant women perform stretching exercises throughout their pregnancy but he warns, "During pregnancy your body produces a hormone called relaxin, which increases the flexibility and pliability of your ligaments and cartilage …. The presence of relaxin increases the risk that you could more easily overstretch your muscles." It is therefore recommended that pregnant women should stretch gently and hold that stretch for around 30 seconds, without bouncing.
