(Health-NewsWire.Net, March 18, 2016 ) Titusville, FL -- Many medical institutions, nursing facilities, and residences rely on different alarms to manage the risk of falls involving elderly patients. Examples of these are chair sensor pads, specifically.
More medical institutions from different countries have started to use chair sensor pads in order to reduce or eliminate the risk of elderly patients falling. One of these institutions is the Northampton General Hospital (NGH).
According to an article posted on the NGH website, using alarms for the elderly works as an intervention that protects patients, particularly the elderly, who are at risk of falling. Using a chair alarm has proven effective at reducing the number of elderly patients who fall. That is according to Jo Jennings, the NGH coordinator for fall prevention.
Jennings reported that using chair alarms proved useful in lowering the number of fall incidents involving senior patients. She wrote about a patient who keeps on forgetting that he cannot walk unaided. The patient could stand, but cannot walk. "The other three patients in the bay were constantly having to tell him to sit down and call for a nurse on his behalf," shared Jennings.
However, when these other patients are not watching him, they are not able to call for help. Jennings revealed, "The man had had two falls when the other patients in the bay were asleep or behind curtains and were unable to call on his behalf."
A chair alarm is designed to alert caregivers whenever their patients, especially those with limited mobility, try to leave their chairs. Some chair alarms have both a noise alarm and a musical alarm features so as not to disrupt sleeping or resting patients. It also has volume control that could be set to high or low.
