(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 03, 2016 ) Truro, Cornwall -- Concept2Commerce posted an informational blog about the link between air pollution and asthma. The original post with the same title "The Link Between Air Pollution and Asthma" was written by Madeline R Vann, MPH and was thouroughly reviewed by Lindsey Marcellin, MD, MPH. The article discusses what air pollution does to people with asthma and how to prevent it.
It is clear that if someone already has asthma, air pollution can easily trigger it and cause an attack. People suffering from asthma can not even roll the windows of their cars down when driving through the city because it makes it difficult for them to breathe. Some research have also showed that living in cities and towns makes it harder for people to control their asthma attacks.
Everyone must understand that that while air pollution doesn't cause asthma, it is one of the top triggers for asthma symptoms and can induce asthma attacks. According Kenneth Rosenman, MD, chief of the division of occupational and environmental medicine at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Studies show that both adults and children asthmatic symptoms are aggravated more in cities where pollution levels are high, children in particular have far more respiratory problems than those living in the country.
This is because asthmatic's airways are considered "hypersensitive" which means elements in the air can cause inflammation and constriction leading to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
There are ways to prevent asthma attacks when the air pollution is high. It is recommended to exercise indoors or early in the morning because air pollution gets higher as the day progresses. Staying away from high-traffic areas is also advisable because vehicle emissions adds to the air pollution. Also everyone with asthma must be aware of what to do if they start to experience symptoms. And last but not the least is to use air pollution-reducing filters indoors like air purifiers. It is important to control air pollution entering the house to prevent asthma attacks.
