(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 31, 2016 ) About Heparin Heparin, a disaccharide anticoagulant or blood thinner, prevents the formation of blood clots. It is produced in the body by basophils and mast cells. It is stored within mast cells and secreted at the injury site. Though it has no effect on already formed clots, it enables the body's natural clot lysis mechanisms to dissolve clots. It can also be taken from outside as a drug. Heparin can be derived from natural sources such as pig intestine and bovine lungs. Heparin is divided into two types based on the fractionation process. Both types have medical use, with the selection done based on preference for a particular condition. UFH: It is directly obtained from natural sources, without undergoing any fractionation. LMWH: It is derived by depolymerizing UFH. The pharmacodynamics properties of LMWH are more predictable when compared to UFH. Apart from these, another category of molecules, ULMWH are available. They are structurally related to LMWHs, but differ in the composition of monosaccharides and oligosaccharides. Therefore, they have different average molecular weights from LMWH.
