Report Summary
The soft drinks market witnessed an increase in Q1-16 which was driven by more favourable weather, supporting growth in the carbonates and packaged water categories in particular. More favourable weather and aggressive pricing by leading brands led recovery in the beer category which was further boosted by increased sales in Horeca this quarter. PET dominates the packaging for cultured dairy drinks where larger sizes are starting to take share from smaller portion packs. White milk, flavoured milk and soymilk are almost exclusively available in cartons.
Key Highlights
- A double digit drop in multinational spirits brands drove the declining trend in the spirits category. It was further hindered by the low sales volumes and high price point of imported brands which discouraged distributers from developing distribution channels. - Positive soft drinks sale trends were further supported by aggressive price promotions in the fruit powders and energy drinks categories. And PET packaging continued its domination in Soft Drinks category. - Consumption of cultured dairy drinks declined in Q1-16 driven by fewer price promotions from the leading players. Similarly, flavoured milk products decline due to lower consumer spending and a price point which remains high. - Hot coffee volumes decreased in Q1-16, driven by shrewder consumer spending. On premise sales remained flat due to the fact that hot coffee is generally the most affordable beverage
