(Health-NewsWire.Net, January 05, 2015 ) Sebring, Florida -- A few days into 2015 and many who pledged New Year's resolutions have already failed and given up. The reality is that of the hundreds of thousands of people that made a New Year's resolution - maybe to lose weight, quit smoking or drink less – a small fraction of them will actually achieve their goal. The reason for so many failures - not having a plan.
Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire, tracked 5,000 people as they attempted to achieve their New Year's resolutions. His team found that "those who failed tended not to have a plan, which made their resolution soon feel like a mountain to climb."
If the resolution is to go from a size 20 to a size 12 in 2015 and by the end of the first couple of weeks remaining a size 20 makes becoming a size 8 seem like an impossible goal. Discouraged and disappointed, the resolution is often dropped in despair.
However, having a long term goal of going from a size 20 to a size 12 can be achieved if realistic short term goals are set and a plan is made to get there mapping the steps and actions that will be needed to achieve that goal. A weight loss plan might begin with getting a pedometer and setting a beginning goal of walking 5000 steps a day working up to 10,000 steps a day and then maintaining that or progressing to more vigorous exercise. The plan would include changes in eating habits that are measurable and achievable as well such as controlling food portions, limiting sweets and white starchy foods, eating more green leafy vegetables and adding healthier foods to one's diet.
In addition to having a plan of action that includes short term measurable goals, sharing plans and goals with someone can further augment the likelihood for success. Following a comprehensive study by finder.com.au, Michelle Hutchison, their Money Expert said, "The most interesting finding from our study was that most people have never shared their New Years' Resolutions yet the simple act of telling people can help you commit to them and stay on track. In fact, the study found that you're more likely to reach your goals if you share them."
Whether the resolution is physical, relational, financial, educational or something else, it can be achieved if broken down into realistic, achievable short term goals that will eventually lead to the end goal and sharing those goals with an accountability partner who will encourage commitment. Joining a support group or club of others looking to achieve similar goals can also provide the motivation needed to succeed.
