(Health-NewsWire.Net, February 21, 2016 ) La Grange, IL -- Kate Rufa, owner of Making Merry Products and the Tranquil Tree brand exercise and yoga mat, determined the mat she would bring to market should be safe for everyone, especially pregnant women. As a mother of three, she understands the challenges pregnant women face and the vast number of environmental dangers that threaten a pregnancy and a child's development.
"Right from the start I knew the mats could not contain PVCs or phthalates," Kate said. "When the U.S. Congress feels it necessary to ban the use of certain phthalates, you know it's bad."
PVCs release dioxins when they start to break down. Dioxins are known to cause damage to the human reproductive system and harm fetal development.
Many phthalates are known to disrupt hormone balance. For a pregnant women this may create complications. A 2015 study by the University of Calgary, Department of Community Health Sciences Research shows children exposed to phthalates prior to birth show slower mental development, lower IQ and attention deficits.[1]
And a recent multidisciplinary study that included organizations like the CDC, Brown University and Columbia University and published in the journal Epidemiology found children exposed to phthalates during pregnancy had increased risk of being overweight or obese as early as 4 years old.[2]
"Exercise, yoga especially, is so good for pregnant women. I wanted to know my exercise and yoga mats didn't contain chemicals and endocrine disruptors that might harm the child of an expectant mother," Kate added. "When you're pregnant, or if you're trying to get pregnant, the last thing a woman should have to consider is whether her mat might harm her child or maybe even prevent her from getting pregnant in the first place."
Instead of PVCs or phthalates, Tranquil Tree exercise and yoga mats contain TPE. This new material is used in many medical devices and healthcare products for its flexibility, resilience and durability. Plus, TPE is environmentally friendly since it can be recycled when the time comes to dispose of the product.
